Scavenger Hunt

"A still frame from a movie that makes you laugh" and "A decadent dessert in a fancy display"
I posted the rest on my flicker (jandersontakepics). Whoever had the idea of a scavenger hunt, it was a great one, my whole family had fun hunting for ideas of things to take!

Darren's Scavenger Hunt part 1

A wooden object
A vintage car

My reflection in someone's sunglasses
A sign with a word that describes me
Something with rust on it
A rough surface
A quiet moment

A place we go to have fun
An Oxymoron
An old Neon Sign
A place to hide (for some, anyway)
Favorite Restaurant - at least for Saturday

Candid Moment Amongst Friends
Something broken
A sign of aging
Something I want, but can't have, and a favorite food. (ok... drink)
Something with a crack in it (my daughter's idea)

I am really excited about our photo scavenger hunt on Saturday. Here's a reminder of the guidelines that we decided, and the list of things to hunt. Have fun, groupies!

Guidelines:
  • Shoot black and white (photo journalist style)
  • Shoot anytime on Saturday, but you should be done shooting by 11:59 PM (on your honor)
  • Minimal editing allowed. This includes cropping and straighting, but try to avoid corrections like contract, exposure, etc.
  • Post some of your pix to the blog by Sunday at 11:59PM
  • Have fun
  • Get creative

Scavenger hunt:

  • Something that tastes like summer
  • a sign of aging
  • A candid moment amongst friends
  • A sign that contains a word which describes you
  • Something with rust on it
  • a quiet moment
  • a rough surface
  • a wooden object
  • an oxymoron
  • Something with a crack in it.
  • A decadent dessert in a fancy display.
  • A water drop.
  • an old neon sign
  • the time on your clock when you wake up on a Saturday
  • Your reflection in someone’s sunglasses.
  • A "vintage" car (any car made before 1970)
  • The sign of your favorite restaurant
  • something from under your bed
  • A pin with something funny on it.
  • A still frame from a movie that makes you laugh
  • Something broken
  • Something you want, but you can't have
  • A favorite food
  • A good place to hide
  • A place you go to have fun

Enjoy! I look forward to seeing all the results!

Fall WPG Outing

Hi Groupies! How does September 11th sound for our next outing? Fall colors will be coming in, and it will be a great time to get out and shoot.

I am totally open for ideas/suggestions as to where we should go. Let me know ASAP so we can start planning!

New Weekly Assignment: Jumptography

Time to take an action shot! Take a picture of someone jumping. Look for someone on a skateboard or a motorcycle, find a game of 3 on 3 at a park or take a family photo with the whole family in mid-air!

If you need inspiration, I would suggest listening to:
Van Halen - "Jump"
House of Pain's "Jump around"
Kris Kross's "Jump Jump"

This is a rock, in case you didn't know what agate is. I took my kids to the dinosaur park in Ogden yesterday, and my boy bought this example of awesomeness.

Capturing Fireworks

With the upcoming holiday, I thought it would be a good time to share this article I found about shooting at a fireworks display. Happy 4th of July everyone!

Patterns in Nature: the pine cone

I just got a reverse lens mount to take macro pictures and I thought this would be a good assignment to give it a try.

WPG Field Trip!

Hey groupies! It's time for our next field trip. We are going to take a drive down to Delta, Utah! If you've never been, they've got some fantastic architecture that would be awesome for photographing! This will be a day trip so I think we should wait until August to go due to the holiday weekends in July. So, the 7th, 14th, or 21st are my proposed dates.

Please let me know what date you'd like so we can try to pick a date that is best for everyone. This should give us plenty of time to plan!

Thanks,
Rye

New Weekly Assignment: Patterns in Nature

There has been a lull in posts over the last week or two and so I decided I would post this week's assignment (mainly to force me to get out and take a few pics). This is a pretty broad subject so it should be pretty easy to find something fun to capture. The weather is nice so no excuses!

PS - congrats to Jed on gettin' hitched and welcome back!

Jello juice - always present in my kitchen.

Please note - with all of my images so far, I have at least done color corrections. This is Straight from the camera - no alterations.

here's the data -
ISO 200
1/125 second
f 5.6
50 mm focal length

A bathrobe over a kitchen bowl. A seamless sheet of white paper lit from behind by my strobe at 1/16 power. The glass was 30 inches from background. Camera was 4 feet from subject. My wife poured the juice into the glass. By the way, this was not a series of multiple shots. This is my first attempt and I snapped the shutter at exactly the right moment. very lucky - but I did it.

Weekly Assignment - "From Your Kitchen"

It should be really easy to find a subject for this one. Try to focus on composition and how you can make the photo uber compelling even though it may be a household item. Look forward to seeing what comes in. Good luck.

This oughta get me caught up...mostly.

I bet you thought I would never post again. HA. Let me know what you think.

Science made clear...

Yup, Science made a clear stone which is similar to a Diamond. Science also made a light source which uses a 650 nm wavelength. Both are depicted here. Enjoy!

Exif data:
manual settings and focus

ISO 100
35mm on a $40 crap lens with the front element removed. It makes an excellent macro lens. :) distance of about 2" from subject.
f 11
AV 1/125

Lit with my AlienBee B400 at about 3/4 power, with the same setup as the one in the scissors photo 2 weeks ago.

The Art of Science Made Clear: The Sound of Science v1.0 and 2.0

v 1.0
v 2.0

So I was listening to the Beastie Boys and it hit me... so I took some old ear phones and plugged them into my iPod. I filled a cookie sheet with a bit of water, rustled up some Paul's Boutique and tah dah!
f-stop: f/2.2
exp: 1/125 sec
ISO: 400
Focal Length: 50mm

I added a color gradient to the image in Photoshop. It was too funky fresh not to post yo!

No our assignment isn't to take pictures of Braden, though that could prove to be interesting. Braden, lets hear it, what's the assignment this week?

This is actually 2 trees. The original was struck by lightning and died and the new tree grew around it (the dead portion is the darker part inside that looks burnt).

ISO 200, f/6.3, 1/160 second, 28mm

I really did not know what to do for abstract, so I guess this is my submission for this week.

This actually is an HDR shot....
